Pickleball History

Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, who later served in Congress. His two friends, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum helped with the start of the first game. They were trying to play badminton, but couldn’t find a shuttlecock, so they used a wiffleball, lowered the badminton net, and made paddles, and thus pickleball was born.

The name was because Joel Pritchard’s family dog was called Pickles, but it also was influenced from the term “pickle boat” because of the manner in which crews chose oars from leftover oars from other boats, and they had made their first paddles from plywood that had been lying around.

Pickleball took off in the 70s, and now there is a national organization as well as international tournaments, as well as admittance into the Special Olympics.

We love pickleball and have no doubt you will too! Come to Pickle Palace and play with us!

How To Play Pickleball

Pickleball is played as doubles and singles, but doubles is more common. The court remains the same for both. The pickleball court is 20 feet wide, and each player has 10 feet of service court. The court is 44 feet long, and the net is at 3 feet in height, and divides the court directly in the middle.

Players serve the ball to each other and have the right to serve until they make an error. When a point is scored, service will change sides.

Points are scored only by serving team, and the game is usually played to 11 points, but you must win by 2 points. Tournament games are sometimes 15 or 21, but the win by 2 rule remains in place.

There is a two-bounce rule when the receiving team is served to. They must let the ball bounce before serving it back and the other team also must allow one bounce before a volley back.
